MARRIAGE LICENSING

The Town Clerk may issue Marriage Licenses to Town Residents and "People From Away". The fee(s) are $10 per individual (i.e. $20 for the couple). The marriage may take place anywhere in Maine.

If the couple are "From Away", then the marriage must be performed in Thorndike.

The first step is to fill out a "Marriage Intentions" form. Both Bride and Groom must sign in the presence of the Town Clerk or hire a Notary Public. If either member was married before, they must present either a Death Certificate or a Divorce/Annulment Decree to the Town Clerk. The Marriage License may be signed by both the Bride and Groom and the Happy Couple are on their way.

DOG LICENSING

All residents with dogs that are at least 6 months old must register their dogs with the Town Clerk. Normal registration is $7.50. Registration for dogs that have been spayed/neutered is $4.00. Kennel registration is $21.00. Late Fee is $20.00.

GARBAGE STICKERS

Garbage stickers are $1.50 per sticker and one sticker is required for each trash bag. Stickers may be bought at the Town Office, Thorndike Auto Parts, and from Wilma Johnson. Remember, Trash Day is on all Wednesdays, EXCEPT the First Wednesday of the Month (which is Recycling Day).

TREASURER'S REPORTS

Treasurer's Reports are issued at every Board of Selectmen's Meeting. These meetings are held on the First and Third Wednesday's of the every month at 6:30pm and are open to the public. Anyone wishing for a copy of the Treasurer's Report may acquire one at this meeting.

VOTER REGISTRATION

All residents of Thorndike may register to vote upon showing proof of residency (Driver's License, Vehicle Registration, or "Heck, I know you live on the Files Hill Road".) A Resident may also register in the Republican, Democrat, or Green-Independent parties, or remain unenrolled. Unenrolled voters may not vote in Primaries. It is important that if you are moving away from Thorndike, that you notify the Registrar of Voters that you will no longer be a Voter in Thorndike.

FISH AND GAME LICENSES

Anyone wanting a Hunting License must show a past hunting license or proof of completion of a Hunter's Safety Course. If the Clerk does not know you and you wish to acquire a Resident Hunting or Fishing Lisence, then you must also show proof that you are a Mainer.

MOTOR VEHICLE REGISTRATION

The Thorndike Town Clerk is a NEW REGISTRATION AGENT. She may now complete all new registrations on vehicles except heavy trucks.

The Excise Tax is calculated using the Suggested Retail Price (SRP) of the vehicle and multiplying it by a depreciating mill rate. The mill rate starts at 24 mils and drops to 4 mils in six years. After that, the excise never goes lower. The Excise Tax cannot be figured from the information: "I have a 97 Dodge Truck." The Vehicle VIN number is needed to determine the exact model. The Excise Tax stays with the Town.

You must first pay your Excise Tax at the Thorndike Town Office, before registering it elsewhere.

The State Registration Fee for a normal plate is $25. Specialty plates such as Conservation (Loon) plates, Vanity Plates, and UMaine plates are an additional $15. Utility Trailer registrations are $8.50 for one year or $16 for two years. For more information, you may call the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles at 287-9000.

The Town Fee is an additional $3.
